What a wonderful historical romance with two people who believe they can never be together. The deceitful story each of them has told one another keeps them apart during the journey they must undertake. Caring for each other, yet honor bound not to reveal their secrets, we readers know the truth, but eagerly await when they find out the truth. It was a suspenseful and endearing tale that I couldn’t put down. My only disappointment was that I missed the erotic passion that they felt for each other finally realizing itself in a torrid love scene. Oh well. First book for me by this author and it won’t be my last.

When I first began reading my first romance novels in junior high (much to the disapproval of my parents) I found myself quickly devouring historical-romances and almost immediately I knew that the genre was one that I would always love. My favorite theme of these classic historical-romances was of course of knights. Sadly, this theme seemed to die out as dukes, ballrooms, and carriages began to take center stage of historical-fiction. I cannot begin to write how exhilarated I was to have found, "Beguiled by the Forbidden Knight!" Yes, finally an author was willing to bring back a theme that had long since been forgotten and I was so overwhelmed with excitement that I could not put this book down.

"Beguiled by the Forbidden Knight," was instantly a breath of fresh into an otherwise stale genre of repeating heroes and heroines. To say that I immensely enjoyed this book would be a serious understatement! I so enjoyed this book for capturing the magic of what I found so romantic as a child and used to spend my times in English classrooms daydreaming over. Gui is the rare and true hero of this book. A knight by profession and a gentleman by choice. I was a fan of Gui from the very beginning of the story.

I think it is a fair assumption to say that I also enjoyed the company of Aelfhild although the forbidden secret that she was carrying could have lead to the ultimate betrayal. Like Gui, Aelfhild was strong-willed and determined to see her task through even if it meant her life could have been on the line for doing so. I very much like how Gui understood why Aelfhild had kept her secret so closely guarded.

The romance in this book is not as steamy as some of the other Medieval titles that I have read. Yes, there was a wild, untamed passion between Gui and Aelfhild but it was nothing too hardcore for the more sensitive reader. In fact, the plot is more centered around the fiction rather than the actual romance, but I still loved this book regardless along with the little teases that the author gives along the way.

If you are not already convinced to give this book a try please take my advice and do read this book. The story, the romance is all worth the small effort it takes to read the title. I for one will definitely be rereading this book again and again in the future years. (NOR voluntarily reviewed a reviewer copy.)

Review by TheFictionChick of Night Owl Romance
It's 1071 and the war between the English and the French has been brutal. Because the French are dominating the English, several nobleman have traveled to England to claim land and marry English ladies. Lady Sigrun and her companion Aelfhild are staying in a convent for safety, but Sigrun has been promised to a French nobleman. Gilbert gets an offer he can't refuse and decides he'd rather hunt than go on a dangerous trip. The man doesn't fancy the journey to fetch his wife in the least and sends his best friend Gui instead. Gui is supposed to tell Sigrun he's Gilbert and bring back his friend's bride, but ends up with two ladies instead of one. Aelfhild pretends to be Sigrun, so Sigrun can escape the clutches of the man she's been promised to, will this trick actually work?

Gui hasn't come out of the last battle he fought unscathed. He's scarred and misses a hand. He's positive he will scare the ladies, but can't resist spending time with Aelfhild. Her fiery spirit intrigues him and he feels drawn to the woman who's destined to be his friend's wife. What will happen when they fall in love? Can this charade end well or will it turn into a huge disaster with grave consequences and broken hearts?

Beguiled by the Forbidden Knight is a fascinating romantic story. Aelfhild has a fierce personality. She speaks her mind, can stand up for herself, isn't afraid to fight and doesn't stay away from confrontation. Sigrun is shy and easily scared, so it's up to Aelfhild to protect them both. She comes up with a plan to make Sigrun's future husband believe she's his intended bride and the gentle and damaged Gui falls for the lie. He's lying himself as well, so they're both not of noble blood and free to marry whomever they want. However, there are so many misunderstandings between them and that makes the situation pretty impossible. I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough to find out where that would lead.

Elisabeth Hobbes has a fantastic compelling writing style. She's chosen an original time frame for her story and makes the eleventh century come to life in an amazing captivating way. Her writing is dynamic and fitting and therefore the story is absolutely delightful. I was spellbound by Aelfhild's adventures and loved her story from beginning to end. There's plenty of chemistry between the main characters and their impossible situation gives the story a fabulous entertaining quality. Beguiled by the Forbidden Knight is a gorgeous love story that melted my heart. I highly recommend this true gem of a book.
